Each vessel begins as an idea sketched in a morning journal. Sometimes it's the curve of a hillside. Other times, the way light falls across a windowsill. We don't force these inspirations into being. Instead, we let them settle, mature, wait for the right moment to emerge.
A practice rooted in patience
Our workshop sits in a converted barn on the outskirts of Zürich. Morning light streams through north-facing windows, illuminating rows of works in progress. Some have been here for weeks, waiting for their turn in the kiln. Others are still wet, covered carefully to slow their drying.
This slow rhythm defines everything we create. A bowl might take three weeks from conception to completion. Not because we're inefficient, but because rushing clay leads to cracks, warping, pieces that lack integrity. The material demands respect for its own timeline.
Material as teacher
We work primarily with stoneware and porcelain. Each clay body has its own character. Stoneware forgives experimentation. It's robust, earthy, willing to hold unexpected forms. Porcelain, by contrast, requires precision. It's unforgiving of impatience but rewards careful attention with translucent beauty.
Our glazing process draws from traditional Japanese and Scandinavian approaches. We mix our own formulas, testing small batches to understand how minerals transform under heat. Iron oxide yields rust and amber. Copper carbonate creates turquoise depths. Ash glazes produce unpredictable landscapes on each surface.

The firing process
Our kiln is a gas-fired Shimpo that reaches cone 10 temperatures. We typically fire once every three weeks, planning each load like a complex puzzle. Placement matters enormously. Pieces near the flame path develop flash marks. Those in cooler zones maintain even color.
The firing itself takes sixteen hours, followed by two days of cooling. Opening the kiln door is always a moment of uncertainty and revelation. Some pieces emerge exactly as envisioned. Others surprise us, transforming in ways we couldn't predict.
